Johnson says he's come to this conclusion based on his organization's surveys, which have gathered information from thousands of franchises over the years.

The strong relationship between the main company and its franchisees must be formed from the beginning, and Johnson believes this depends on the franchisor's ability to share its expertise. If this happens effectively, the relationship has a better chance of being healthy and the franchise has a better chance of being successful.

This is the reasoning behind the Franchise Institute's strict "World-Class Franchise" certification, Johnson says. Rather than relying on metrics, the institute talks directly to franchisees about their relationship with the franchisor before the certification is awarded.

Last month, the "World-Class Franchise" designation was given to Mosquito Squad, a pest control company. The company received positive ratings from more than 80 percent of employees in the survey conducted by the Franchise Research Institute and FranSurvey.
